My building doesn’t recycle

Crowdsourcing data informing about recycling activity in Chicago

My building doesn’t recycle is a web application that allows multi-unit renters (renters in buildings with 5 or more units) to report that their building does not recycle.

The site was created at Open Government Hack Night and the licenses (Upgraded Mapbox and Google API) have been donated by Smart Chicago Collaborative who offers free developer resources for qualifying civic innovation projects.

It visualizes reports of recycling noncompliance and provides a hub for residents of multi-unit buildings and other Chicago residents to have a collective voice in favor of more comprehensive recycling services.

The final objective of this project is to use the reports as a tool for advocacy and to push for the strengthening and enforcement of the Burke-Hansen Ordinance.

The application is being used by the City of Chicago.
